Pistorius: Russia Is Arming for NATO Conflict
Germany has presented its first comprehensive military strategy in response to the changed security situation in Europe. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius described Russia as the biggest foreseeable threat to the continent's security and warned against its course under President Vladimir Putin.
According to Pistorius, Russia is preparing for a military confrontation with NATO through a sustained buildup of arms and regards the use of force as a legitimate tool to advance its interests. The new strategy therefore envisages strengthening defense capacities and the ability to confront possible aggression together with allies, with a combined force of up to 460,000 troops.
The document also contains a plan for the development of the armed forces, setting out their future structure and scope. Its details remain classified. Germany also warns that Russia is employing hybrid tools including espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns.
The strategy calls for modernizing the Bundeswehr with the aim of building the strongest conventional army in Europe. It emphasizes technological superiority, stronger defense capabilities and the use of innovation, including artificial intelligence.
Germany also says it wants to assume a greater share of responsibility within NATO and contribute to its deterrent power.
