Espionage may have prematurely revealed Machadová's Nobel Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is facing allegations that the disclosure of the name of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner prior to the official announcement was the result of digital espionage. The committee's permanent secretary told Reuters that although the exact source of the leak is unknown, cyber domains remain the main suspect.

Bets on Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado suddenly increased on October 10, just hours before the winner was announced. From a few hundred dollars, the volume of bets rose to approximately $2.2 million. Until then, her name had not been among the favorites.

An investigation by one of Norway's intelligence services is looking into the possibility that this was either an internal leak or an attack by criminal groups or a state actor. However, it is not yet clear whether the aim was to profit financially or to undermine the credibility of the Nobel Prize.

Machado received the award for her fight against the Venezuelan dictatorship and later dedicated it to US President Donald Trump, who has long claimed that he deserves the prize. However, the prize is non-transferable.
