Religious leaders arrested during protest against immigration policy
Dozens of religious leaders were detained in Washington, D.C., at the Capitol during protests against President Donald Trump's immigration policy and calls to cut funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Protest organizers said demonstrators had come to express their opposition to the government's immigration policies and ICE's exploitation of their communities.
The protest was attended by representatives of several religious communities, who sat in front of the Senate chambers carrying banners with demands such as "Do justice, love kindness, abolish ICE."
According to the organization Faith in Action, the protest was also in response to two controversial deaths of US citizens during federal raids in Minnesota, which sparked widespread anti-government demonstrations across the country and criticism of immigration policy.
A spokesperson for the US Capitol Police said that demonstrations in Congress buildings are "illegal" and that 54 protesters had been arrested.
