Islamists and Tuareg Rebels Behind Major Assault on Mali Junta
Mali is facing what analysts describe as one of the biggest coordinated attacks in years, with insurgents striking the heart of the military regime in Bamako and the nearby Kati military base.
Explosions and heavy gunfire were reported early on Saturday in Bamako, Kati, Gao, Mopti and Kidal. A UN security note described the violence as “simultaneous complex attacks” across the country, while the US embassy urged citizens to shelter in place.
Four security sources told Reuters that the al-Qaeda-linked JNIM group was involved and appeared to have coordinated with the Tuareg-led FLA alliance. The FLA later claimed control of positions in Gao and one military camp in Kidal.
Although the army said it had restored control, residents reported continued fighting. Analysts said the choice of targets - especially Kati, Bamako and Kidal - suggested a major escalation and a direct challenge to the junta’s claim that it had restored territorial control.
