Poland to Challenge EU-Mercosur Trade Deal in Court

Poland has decided to take legal action against the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur and plans to file a complaint with the EU’s Court of Justice. According to Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Warsaw wants to block the implementation of the agreement, which it sees as a threat to domestic farmers.

Poland is one of the most vocal critics of the deal, alongside France.

While supporters argue that the agreement would improve access for European companies to South American markets, critics warn of rising imports of cheaper food, particularly beef, sugar and poultry. They argue that this could weaken the competitiveness of European producers.

Warsaw also says the agreement could endanger both food security and consumer protection.

The European Parliament backed a judicial review of the agreement in January. Meanwhile, the European Commission has announced that the deal will be provisionally applied from 1 May. Poland therefore has until the end of May to file its complaint.
