Tusk Urges Caution Over Hungary’s Possible Policy Shift

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that a victory by Peter Magyar and his Tisza party could improve Hungary’s relations with the European Union, but would not necessarily bring a fundamental policy change. European leaders should remain realistic and not expect an immediate shift toward progressive positions, the Financial Times reported, citing Tusk.

Hungary is likely to maintain conservative positions on migration, climate policy and cultural values, he said, which could disappoint parts of the European political spectrum.

At the same time, he expects changes in key areas such as relations with Russia, the fight against corruption and strengthening the rule of law.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has struck a similarly cautious tone. Tusk also announced an upcoming visit by Hungary’s next prime minister to Warsaw, which he said should signal renewed cooperation. He described the election outcome as important for regional stability.
