Pentagon Unveils $1.5tn Defense Budget Plan for 2027

The Pentagon has outlined a $1.5tn US defense budget proposal for 2027, marking the largest year-on-year increase since the Second World War.

The administration of Donald Trump is also introducing a new category of “presidential priorities”, including projects such as the Golden Dome missile shield, drone capabilities, artificial intelligence and strengthening the defense industry.

Investment in shipbuilding, aerospace and autonomous systems is set to rise sharply. Procurement of F-35 Lightning II jets is expected to reach 85 units, while spending on drones will exceed $50bn. In naval construction, plans include the purchase of 18 warships and 16 support vessels at a cost of more than $65bn.

The budget also provides for an expansion of the army by tens of thousands of soldiers, alongside pay increases, particularly for lower ranks.

At the same time, it excludes the cost of the conflict with Iran, which the government plans to address separately. According to available information, part of the funding will again depend on an emergency budget package approved by Congress.
