One Dead as Trolleybus Crashes into Salzburg Supermarket
A trolleybus on line 6 crashed into a supermarket on Raiffeisenstraße in the Salzburg district of Itzling on Monday midday, killing one person and injuring several others.
Red Cross spokeswoman Roberta Thanner said two people were seriously injured and five suffered minor injuries. A further 25 to 30 people were affected by the accident. Two doctors and six ambulances attended the scene, along with crisis intervention teams.
The trolleybus broke through the main entrance of the building and came to a halt in the foyer. The condition of the building is currently being assessed by the city's structural engineer. The Salzburg fire brigade responded with four vehicles and 16 officers, assisting with access to the injured and securing the scene.
A traffic accident expert was called to the scene on the instructions of the public prosecutor's office. Service on line 6 has been temporarily suspended.
Salzburg Linien, the transport company, expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
