EU Ready to Release Ukraine Loan after Hungary Veto ends

The European Union is ready to release a €90 billion loan to Ukraine once Hungary lifts its veto, European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius said.

He indicated that a shift could follow Sunday’s election result, in which opposition leader Peter Magyar won. "The people have spoken. A new wind is blowing," Kubilius said.

He added that the European Union (EU) was prepared to act without delay. "In any case, we are ready to implement the loan as soon as we get the green light," the commissioner said.

The loan, agreed by EU member states in December, is intended to help Ukraine finance its defence against Russia. Hungary has blocked its disbursement, one of the most outspoken opponents of the aid.

The defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, widely seen as the strongest critic of EU support for Ukraine, could remove a key obstacle to the release of the funds.
