Magyar Expects Swift Formation of New Hungarian Government

Peter Magyar, leader of the party that won the most votes in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, expects to be tasked with forming a government in the coming weeks.

He said President Tamas Sulyok plans to give him the mandate at the inaugural session of the new parliament.

According to Magyar, a new government could be appointed by mid-May or even earlier. He made the remarks after a meeting with the head of state, who informed him of this intention.

“The president informed me that at the inaugural session of the new parliament he will ask me, as the leader of the party that won the most votes, to form the government and become prime minister”, Magyar said.

He added that coalition negotiations are expected to proceed quickly, allowing for the early appointment of a new cabinet and a swift transfer of power.
