Beijing Urges Washington to Exercise Caution Over Taiwan

China has urged the United States to exercise caution over Taiwan, rejecting US claims of military pressure as distorted and driven by bad intentions.

Chen Binhua, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said Washington repeatedly refers to a so-called Chinese threat, thereby misrepresenting the situation. He stressed that Taiwan is an internal matter for China and does not permit external interference.

His remarks come amid rising tensions between Beijing and Washington over the island. The US State Department has recently called on China to halt military pressure and engage in dialogue with Taiwan.

Beijing has in turn demanded that the United States stop arms shipments to the island.

China has stepped up military activity around Taiwan in recent weeks, including conducting exercises near the island. Taiwan, which has a democratic government, rejects Beijing’s claims to sovereignty.

Chinese leaders maintain that they favour peaceful reunification, but have not ruled out the use of force. Taiwan insists that its future can only be decided by its people, with President Lai Qing-te rejecting Beijing’s claims.
