MEPs Push for Reforms in Turkey, Criticize EU Response
Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs have warned of deteriorating democratic standards in Turkey in a report calling for concrete reforms.
According to MEPs, Ankara is failing to take advantage of renewed momentum in European Union enlargement, as fundamental shortcomings persist in the rule of law, human rights and media freedom. They stress the need to strengthen judicial independence, protect journalists and end politically motivated trials.
The report also criticizes the approach taken by the EU and its Member States, arguing that the response has not matched the seriousness of the situation. MEPs are therefore calling for a clearer and more assertive defence of democratic principles.
Although accession negotiations with Turkey have been stalled for several years, MEPs underline its strategic importance as a NATO ally. They point to its influence in regions including the Black Sea, the Southern Caucasus and the Middle East.
Alongside the criticism, they propose continued cooperation in areas of shared interest, the resumption of political dialogue and stronger support for civil society.
The report is due to be put to a vote in the European Parliament plenary.
