US Blockade Cripples Iran’s Maritime Trade
The United States has said its military has effectively halted maritime trade to and from Iran, dealing a significant blow to the country’s economy. At the same time, US President Donald Trump has indicated that negotiations with Tehran to end the conflict could resume in the coming days.
According to US command, the move disrupts trade flows that account for around 90% of Iran’s economy. Several tankers have been intercepted since the blockade began, while other vessels have been turned back.
The conflict, which began in late February, has also led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments.
Trump suggested that talks between the US and Iran could continue in Pakistan, with Vice President JD Vance expressing cautious optimism. The main point of contention remains Iran’s nuclear programme, with the two sides divided over the duration of a possible moratorium.
The United States is pushing for a long-term suspension of nuclear activities and the removal of enriched material, while Iran is calling for the lifting of sanctions. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, which Washington says is not covered by the ceasefire.
