Hungary Holds Its 10th Parliamentary Election Since Regime Change

Hungary’s 10th parliamentary election since the 1990 regime change began on Sunday, with polling stations opening at 06.00. In the single-round vote, 8.2 million eligible voters can cast ballots until 19.00.

The main contest is between the ruling Fidesz-KDNP bloc, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and the opposition party TISZA, led by Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Peter Magyar.

Orban has governed in coalition with the Christian Democratic KDNP continuously since 2010, securing a constitutional majority in the past four consecutive parliamentary elections. Most recently, the conservative alliance won the 2022 election with more than 54%, taking 135 seats in the 199-member legislature.

More than 500,000 Hungarians are voting from abroad.

The Median Institute estimates the distribution of seats in the 199-member National Assembly based on five recent representative surveys. According to its projections, Fidesz could win only 49–55 seats, while TISZA could secure 138–143 seats.

The pro-government Nezopont Institute, in a poll conducted on 3 April, put Fidesz at 46% and TISZA at 40%.
