Trump raises pressure on NATO ahead of key meeting
US president Donald Trump believes that NATO has ‘been tested and failed’ during the conflict with Iran. This was stated by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt just hours before Trump met with Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte in Washington.
According to Leavitt, it is ‘very sad’ that NATO has, in her words, turned its back on the American people over the past six weeks, despite their role in funding allies’ defence. She added that Trump expects to have a ‘very open and frank conversation’ with Rutte.
The remarks come at a time of heightened tensions between the US and European NATO members following the conflict with Iran. Trump has criticised allies in recent weeks for what he sees as a lack of support for US and Israeli actions, and has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of the US leaving the alliance.
Leavitt also said the president is focused on ensuring free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions.
Trump’s meeting with Rutte is therefore expected to be crucial for the future of the US–NATO relationship, which critics say is facing one of its most serious tests in years.
