Hungary-Ukraine clash intensifies as Vance intervenes
During a visit to Budapest, US Vice President JD Vance sharply criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over remarks he made about Viktor Orban, describing them as ‘scandalous’.
The dispute comes amid already strained relations between Hungary and Ukraine. Budapest has accused Kyiv of attempting to interfere in Hungary’s domestic politics by restricting oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline. Ukrainian officials reject this claim, insisting the disruption was caused by Russian drone attacks and that repairs to the infrastructure are underway.
Tensions have intensified further after Hungary blocked a substantial EU loan intended for Ukraine. In response, Zelenskyy suggested there could be consequences for those responsible, remarks that drew a pointed rebuke from Vance.
The US vice president also accused parts of the media of applying double standards when assessing alleged foreign influence in elections, and criticised what he described as EU pressure on Hungary.
