Hormuz shipping plan blocked at UN by China and Russia
The UN Security Council has failed to adopt a resolution aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz after it was vetoed by China and Russia.
The proposal, tabled by Bahrain, sought to encourage coordination between states to secure a key maritime route vital for global energy trade.
Eleven of the 15 council members voted in favour of the resolution, but a veto by permanent members was enough to block it. Two countries voted against and two abstained.
