Hamas has made disarmament conditional on a complete Israeli withdrawal
The Palestinian movement Hamas has told mediators that it will not negotiate disarmament without guarantees of a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. This condition, according to sources, is a key part of its position on US President Donald Trump's Peace Council plan, which addresses disarmament and the implementation of a ceasefire.
The Hamas delegation held talks in Cairo with Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators and made a number of demands. In addition to the withdrawal of Israeli forces, it is also demanding an end to violations of the ceasefire and full compliance with its provisions.
At the same time, Hamas draws attention to the continuing Israeli attacks, which it claims have caused hundreds of casualties. Israel argues that the attacks are directed against threats by militants.
According to sources, the militant movement refuses to negotiate disarmament until these issues are resolved. Israel, on the other hand, insists that a withdrawal from Gaza can only take place once Hamas has fully disarmed. The talks have thus far failed to produce a breakthrough and another meeting is planned for next week.
The United States is also considering continuing the reconstruction of Gaza without disarming Hamas, but only in areas under Israeli control.
