Rome blocks landing of US bombers
Italy, under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has refused to allow US bombers to land at Sigonella air base after Washington failed to request the necessary permission or carry out the required consultations under existing agreements, the Roma Corriere website reported.
The decision followed a determination by the Italian authorities that the planned flights did not form part of standard logistical operations and had not been approved in advance by either the government or parliament.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said Italy was acting strictly in accordance with the rules in force and that parliament must be involved in operations falling outside the agreed framework. He also rejected claims of a deterioration in relations with the US and said cooperation remained solid.
The Italian opposition is demanding an explanation in parliament, while some politicians are calling for a tougher stance on US operations. The government, however, insists that the country does not want to be drawn into a conflict with Iran and regards adherence to the rules as essential.
