US citizenship dispute reaches Supreme Court, Trump attends

Donald Trump plans to attend in person a Supreme Court hearing on one of the most controversial measures of his administration – a proposal to limit birthright citizenship.

The case centres on the interpretation of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which has until now guaranteed citizenship to all children born in the United States, regardless of their parents’ status.

An executive order signed on his first day in office seeks to alter that longstanding interpretation. The amendment guarantees citizenship to anyone born on US soil. Under the proposed change, children born in the country would no longer automatically acquire US citizenship. A lower court has blocked the measure, ruling that it violates both the Constitution and federal law.

The president has openly criticised several judges, particularly those nominated by his predecessors Barack Obama and Joe Biden. The dispute forms part of a broader push against migration.
