Poland to build new defense system against drones
Poland has signed a contract for the construction of a new air defense system designed to combat drones. According to the PAP agency, the San system will be developed by companies from the Polish arms group in cooperation with the private company APS and the Norwegian company Kongsberg.
The agreement was concluded with the participation of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The San system will consist of anti-aircraft battery modules and is expected to be completed within two years. Its cost is estimated at around €3.5 billion.
It will complement Poland's existing air defense layers, including the American Patriot systems (Wisła program), British CAMM missiles (Narew program), and Polish Pilica and Pilica+ systems.
Prime Minister Tusk described the signing of the contract as a historic moment and a breakthrough in the defense of Poland's eastern border, the EU, and NATO, as it is intended to protect the eastern border on land and in the air. He emphasized the importance of cooperation with Norway and coordination with countries neighboring Russia and Belarus.
According to him, San is an unprecedented system that has no equivalent in Europe in terms of integrated defense against modern types of air aggression, including drones. He also recalled incidents from last fall when Russian drones penetrated Polish airspace.
