The EU is looking for ways to reduce its dependence on American LNG

According to Politico, the European Union plans to intensify its efforts to diversify energy supplies and reduce its dependence on American liquefied natural gas (LNG). This is in response to statements by President Donald Trump, who did not rule out the use of force against Greenland.

This was announced by European Union Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen at a briefing in Brussels.

The US currently supplies more than a quarter of the EU's gas, a significant increase from five percent five years ago. This dependence will increase further with the entry into force of a total ban on Russian gas.

The Commission now wants to look for alternative suppliers, particularly in Canada, Qatar, and North African countries. At the same time, it is working to secure non-Russian sources of nuclear fuel for member countries that are still dependent on Moscow.

Jørgensen stressed that the goal is not a trade war with the US, but he believes that growing geopolitical tensions and Trump's statements are a "wake-up call" for the EU to avoid replacing one energy dependency with another. However, American LNG remains "essential" to cover the shortfall in Russian gas.
