He feels like a man, but will compete for Sweden among women at the Winter Olympics
Elis Lundholm, a 23-year-old athlete from Värmdö who identifies as a man, has qualified for the Olympic Games in the freestyle skiing moguls event. She will compete among women, according to the Sweden Herald.
Although she officially declared herself a man five years ago, she has not undergone any medical procedures and, in her own words, has not faced any problems in the world of skiing. "They have always treated me well," she said.
Robert Hansson, sports director for the discipline, confirms the community's smooth acceptance: "The questions were answered and it was fine right away. It's simple."
Lundholm is aware of the risk of hate speech on the internet that increased attention during the Olympics may bring. "Of course, I've thought about it, but I do my thing and I don't care," she said.
The International Olympic Committee will deploy an artificial intelligence system during the Games to monitor and remove hateful comments on social media, in an effort to protect athletes like Lundholm.
Lundholm's best result in the World Cup is 18th place.
