Germany opens debate on European nuclear shield

European countries are beginning to discuss the idea of a joint "nuclear umbrella" that would complement the existing security guarantees provided by the United States. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that the talks are still in the early stages and no decision has been made.

The debate is gaining momentum at a time of growing tension between Europe and the US, with President Donald Trump questioning traditional alliances and pushing European partners to invest more in defense.

Merz pointed out that Germany cannot develop its own nuclear weapons due to international agreements, but it can discuss joint solutions with Britain and France, which have nuclear arsenals.

According to Thomas Röwekamp, head of the parliamentary defense committee, Germany could contribute its technological capabilities to a possible European initiative.
