Brussels approves sanctions against Iran, including the interior minister

On Thursday, EU foreign ministers agreed on new sanctions against Iran. They target individuals and organizations responsible for the violent suppression of anti-government protests and Iran's support for Russia.

The sanctions also target Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and other high-ranking officials. At the same time, a political agreement is expected on adding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to the EU's list of terrorist organizations, which would mark a symbolic shift in Europe's approach to the Iranian regime.

Although some countries, including France, were initially reluctant, Paris ultimately supported the move, paving the way for the decision to be adopted.

The IRGC, which has strong ties to both the economy and the military, also controls the country's nuclear and missile programs.
